Basements by design are cool and damp. They provide two of the three things needed for mold to grow. The only missing piece is a food source. Wood and drywall are that food source. With traditional construction methods, mold will flourish in a basement environment.

In the US, mold detection technology is used during a home inspection to determine if the mold spore count in the air exceeds allowable limits. They focus these air samples in bathrooms and basements. This protocol will come to Canada in the next couple of years.
